U-Turns? Where Can I Do Them?

A man in Bradford has been arrested recently when he performed a U-turn during a police chase, to drive the wrong way up the slip road on a busy street.

Not sure on when you are allowed to turn? Read our advice:

Look out for signs! If you see the sign below you can’t do a U-turn.

Be aware as if you are caught, you will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), three penalty points on your licence and a £60 fine.

Before making a U-turn, always ask yourself:

Is it safe to perform the manoeuvre?

Is it legal?

Will I inconvenience other road users or pedestrians?

Can I see clearly or should I pull up on the left initially?

Are there any cyclists or motorcycles that are difficult to see?

Is the road wide enough to perform the U-turn safely?

Are There Flaws In Self-Driving Cars?

You may think if your car was self-driven, it would be great! We’ve thought of some possible disadvantages to why it wouldn’t be such a good idea…

  • Who is guilty? If the car crashes, no one will be guilty. Insurance companies will lose out big time as who should compensate?
  • The price! Self-driving cars would probably cost more than 100,000. Who can afford that? Our lessons are much less!
  • Jobless Drivers – Many taxi drivers, truck drivers will become without a job as autonomous vehicles will take over
  • Security issues – Somebody may hack into your car system and take control of the operations

And most of all, who would teach you all? At Britannia, we take pride in teaching our learners and want to do it forever.

Read our show me tell me questions for advice.

Bay parking top tips! (Part 2)

Once you have prepared the vehicle and observed your surroundings making sure that it is safe to move. Make you also remember the 3 skills that were spoken about in the previous post.

A first key tip is to position yourself correctly so that any reference points you have will line up, as when you are taught each instructor may have a key way to find references for you so that you are able to parallel perfectly everytime.

The next key tip is fast steering but a slow and steady car, this means you will slow the car down as you will be full locking the steering wheel, this is best done when the vehicle is at a slow speed. This is so that you are aware that you are in full control, this is also safe there may be vehicles close by or parked near. Also moving at a slower speed will allow you to better observe your surroundings and keep in line with your reference points.

Observation is a key tip in the reversing of the car into the bay, so the speed must again remain slow paced, this is so that you can best observe all around the car ensuring that there are no pedestrians are cars approaching. This is why a slow speed to best as you will be observing whether you are in your lines and that it is safe and there are no people nearby.

Bay parking top tips! (Part 1)

Bay parking is one of the potential manoeuvres that could be chosen for you in your test, and it is a manoeuvre that many learners fear. But with our top tips, you’ll be ready!

There are 3 key points that you should remember the first being that 1.) you are in control of the vehicle, the speed the distance and the breaking. All factors that you control. 2.)  Observation is another key aspect of this, you need to always be aware of our surroundings. To need to observe all around the car just simply glancing in the rear view mirror will not do, you have to make sure its safe for you to move and that there are no other road users around or approaching. 3.) Accuracy, this will improve with practice and determination. You must ensure when you park the vehicle that there is an almost equal gap on either side, so that other can park and get in and out of vehicles safely.

Eco driving tips to drive by!

With the changes and advances that car manufactures are making to not only create efficient cars but also cars running on alternative fuel types. Ensuring that you are driving in an eco friendly manner is important.

We have some tips just for you. First you may be wondering what eco driving is? It is to look ahead, drive smoothly and avoid acceleration and heavy braking. This saves wear and tear on the car and makes for a more economic use of fuel. To pay attention to gear changing as being a gear too low will increase the rev count. These may seem like small and simple things but they can have a large impact, plus until eco friendly cars made mandatory its best to try and conserve much fuel as possible.

With our highly trained instructors they will be able to help teach you to drive in an eco friendly manner which will then become habit for you.

Why driving tests changed

The DVLA changed the way driving tests were taken as they wanted to better prepare you for driving once you had passed.

They wanted to incorporate more high speed roads as they realised the best way for you to be prepared was to practice and have your test on them. As this would help you to feel confident as your driving instructor would be there to guide you through it making sure you understands the rules signs and how to follow the bends.

They also added the satnav portion of a test as that is what many cars are built in with and what drivers will use when driving to new locations. Being a new driver you would need to be able to listen and follow the satnav as it is something you will you use in future as some people who learn in silence may find it hard to adapt and listen to the satnav so make sure you let your instructor know if you need further satnav lessons.
