WINTER TYRE SALES ON THE UP

Despite the milder weather we have experienced this year we are taking extra precautions as drivers.

Michelin has reported that their sales for winter tyres are up 50% on the previous year, as drivers were preparing for the harsh weather.

Last year we saw minus temperatures and lots of snow and it is thought drivers did not want the chaos of losing grip on icy or snow-covered winter roads again.

Winter tyres are fantastic, they keep those drivers that rely on their car on the move and improve stopping distance despite the poor road conditions.

Agnes Crystal acted Courageously to Avert the Danger.

Agnes Crystal is not a licensed driver. She does not know how to drive. She is the same person who stopped a runaway bus. She showed immense level of concentration to avert the danger by stopping the bus. She changed the direction and rammed it into the railings. The driver was not in the bus at that time. The bus started to roll down the hill. She reacted quickly and jumped on to the driving seat to avoid the collision with a car coming from the opposite direction. There were eight other passengers on the bus. The Tayside Police has nominated her for bravery award. She is maintaining a low profile. She is feeling good that everybody was safe and healthy in the end.

She took another bus straight away and went to attend the line dancing class. It is a great lesson to draw inspiration from. She is a not a trained driver or holds any practical knowledge. It was her willingness to do something which brought a happy ending to the whole incident. A formal warning has been issued to the driver. We all need people like Agnes Crystal to be the role-model for our society.

DRIVERS ARE KEEPNG HOLD OF THEIR VEHICLES FOR EVEN LONGER

In 2007 research found that the average car owner kept hold of their vehicle for just 53 months. Yet current research has found that owners of new vehicles are keeping their car for 71 months, with those owning used vehicles keeping it for around 48 months.

It is thought that with better warranties, more reliable vehicles and of course the difficult economic times, people are choosing to keep hold of their cars for longer. So all those with 2006 number plates, you are not alone.

WHY NOT TAKE A THEORY CLASS OR TWO

The theory test for car drivers is typically self study and most people pass within the first few attempts however, for one man he is still trying to gain his certificate after failing 92 times.

The unnamed 28 year old male from Leicester has failed 92 times leaving him with a debt of nearly £3000. Yet his perseverance is admirable and he is at least continuing to gain his licence legally.

Think About Using Public Transportation to Beat the Soaring Fuel Costs.

Everybody seems to be asking the same question nowadays! The rising fuel costs have thrown people off-balance. They are finding it difficult to beat the soaring fuel prices. We need to look around and start counting our options. The public transportation system is always a safe bet. There has been a significant rise in the number of people using public transportation means to commute everyday. It serves several purposes at the same time. You can save time and money both. It is also a great opportunity to socialise yourself with a different set of people.

You might find it difficult to continue with it. This is our best option. We cannot afford not to try it at least. The fuel costs have increased a lot in the past few months. We cannot do anything about it. The respective councils have already been informed on the matter. We need to be bit more creative in our imagination. We can start using public transportation system more. There is no rule which suggests that we cannot try something which was not done in the past. It is the right time to improvise things and find a permanent solution.

WOMEN BETTER AT PARKING, SO RESEARCH SUGGESTS

The stormy debate as to which sex is the better driver will never be fully resolved as there is no clear way to establish whether men or women are better drivers.

Men have always been thought to be the better driver however; one study has found that women take the lead when it comes to parking.

Up to 2,500 drivers were monitored across 700 NCP car parks across the country, within the space of a month. They checked 7 different components and women came out on top.

Women were said to be better at locating a parking space, they would typically reverse into the space and were better at lining the car up before starting the manoeuvre.

Men however, would typically pull forward into the bay and were less likely to reposition the car once it was in the space (the article did not mention whether the vehicle was positioned perfectly to start with though).

Emily Smith of Britannia Driving School said: “Men and women all have their strengths and weaknesses, personally I think that we should all be treated as individuals and merit should be given based on our skills not our gender.”

DRIVER NARROWLY AVOIDS SERIOUS INJURY AFTER CONCRETE THROWN AT HIS CAR

Callum Jackson had a lucky escape when a concrete block was thrown at his car, smashed throw his windscreen and landed on the back seat of his car.

He was travelling on an A-road at the time and it’s thought that the rock was thrown from the bridge. He was lucky to only suffer bruising to his ribs and that he was able to keep control of his car. It’s also lucky that he did not have any passengers at the time.

West Mercia Police are investigating and want to speak to other drivers that were on the same stretch of the road at the time. Chief Inspector Keith Gee said: “Throwing anything, especially concrete blocks at passing vehicles is an extremely dangerous practice.”

A concrete block being thrown is a malicious thing to do however, even small items of rubbish could be potentially dangerous. Anything that could obstruct a driver’s view or allow them to lose control of the car could have serious consequences.

EVEN MORE DISTRACTIONS FOR DRIVERS

As technology advances, driver’s safety is compromised. Safety officials in the U.S. have raised concerns over devises available to those who purchase luxury cars. Dashboard devises can enable text messaging, navigation, phone dialling and web surfing enabling access to Twitter and Facebook.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants the gadgets to turn off once the driver puts the car into gear. They are hoping to work with the manufacturers to help develop devises to be useful but safe at the same time.

There are so many distractions drivers face day-to-day, we should be trying to eliminate these distractions not increase them.
