Clutch Control Tips

Being a learner driver presents a variety of obstacles – From overcoming the initial fear or the first lesson all the way through to mastering the manoeuvres in preparation for your test, there are certainly a lot of challenges presented.

One of the main struggles you may face is mastering clutch control. This is a vital part of being a capable driver, and so it is important to get it right. There are no straightforward rules to this – Every car is different when it comes to the clutch – But we would advise taking it slowly to begin with, until you get used to feeling where the biting point is. Rushing this will simply result in stalling the car and the additional stress and embarrassment of this, before you start over.

Don’t Let Lessons Get You Down

Learning to drive can be a struggle at times. With the variety of challenges presented to us when we are going through our driving lessons, be it learning to master clutch control, perfecting the dreaded hill start, or coping with driving in high traffic situations, sometimes the stress can be unbearable.

But it is important to remember when you are in these situations not to let this get you down. If you are struggling to pick up one task, simply ask your driving instructor to let you focus on these more in your lessons, until you get it right – Then move onto the next. The next thing you know, you’ll be putting in for your test!

The 2 Second Gap

Recently we ran an article about how to drive with anticipation – That is, the skill of knowing there are a variety of dangers that can befall a driver and therefore being constantly prepared for any unexpected incident. However unfortunately, despite how well prepared you are, sometimes the unexpected is exactly that, so you need extra precautions to keep yourself safe.

One great piece of advice we can offer you in one that you have probably heard before – Maintain at least a two-second gap between yourself and the car in front should allow you sufficient time to react to any unforeseen event and take the appropriate action to avoid a collision. But remember – When driving in poor weather conditions, the time to stop your car is likely to increase.

Parking Safely

There are a great deal of difficulties that may come with driving – From initially learning to drive and passing the test, to mastering new skills such as motorway driving or driving in traffic on the morning commute, and many more. So much so that on some days, we can’t wait to just park up and forget about driving for a while.

But are you sure your driving is safe? Many drivers forget that the car can be just as dangerous when you’re out of it as when you’re in it. Was the handbrake fully on? Was the car left in gear? Were you double-parked? Did you leave your lights on? Were all the doors locked? Were any valuables left on show? These are all questions that you should ask yourself and consider before parking and leaving your car for the night.

Driving With Anticipation

Have you ever been out driving, and suddenly needed to react fast to something? Of course you have. Perhaps it is a driver in front of you suddenly slamming their brakes on, or maybe a child runs out into the road ahead, or maybe even a tyre bursts on your own vehicle – Sometimes these incidents are unavoidable, and a fast reaction is necessary.

However it is always best to anticipate these sort of events, which will help you to prepare for them. We know, it may sound paranoid to assume the worst it always going to happen, but if you learn to anticipate what may happen, then we guarantee that you will always be ready for what will happen.

Stay On The Left

There are a variety of rules to follow when driving – From making sure you are travelling at the right speed for the area you are in, to keeping an eye on the condition of your car to make sure it is safe to be on the roads – Whilst some rules may annoy us more than others, we need to remember rules are there to keep us safe when we’re behind the wheel.

One such rule is driving on the left-hand side of the road. Having a set side of the road ensures an agreement between all drivers for where they need to be, unless they are overtaking. Although many drivers still do not seem to realise that this rule also applies for driving on motorways – Despite there being three lanes, the left lane is still the lane needed for normal driving.

Self-Driving Cars to End Motoring Joy?

On our post yesterday, we covered the various benefits that can be attained by the arrival of self-driving cars – From easing the pressures of driving, to allowing you to multi-task when behind the wheel, we all have to admit it would definitely come in useful to own a self-driving car.

However, have we stopped to think about what we might lose when we allow our car to do the driving for us? Not only is driving a practical function to allow us to get around easily, but it also acts as a source of leisure and fun for many drivers, and we here at Britannia would be very sad to see the end of the days when we look forward to getting behind the wheel.

Driverless Cars – The Benefits

There are a lot of things about driving many of us may not like – From the aggravation of being stuck in traffic to the dangers inherent when driving in poor weather conditions, sometimes we are happy to be out of our cars.

However the dawn of the self-driving car may be about to change all that. Not only will it ease the pressures of being in control of the vehicle, it will also allow us to multi-task, such as catching up on some calls or emails whilst on the morning commute, or even grabbing a few more minutes of shut-eye on the way to work.
