THE NEW LONDON BUSES UNVEILED

Boris Johnson made a promise back in 2008 to phase out the bendy buses and make bus travel attractive again.

Friday saw the new London bus officially revealed. The 87 seater, double-decker, with two staircases (allowing quicker entry and egress), three sets of doors and a hop on and off rear platform is set to transform London’s travel system.

The older generation, who will remember the Routemaster, say it’s a 21st century version and they are excited at the prospect of some of the new buses having a conductor like old times. The buses are set to be slowly introduced in February 2012.

A heartrending song and an appeal against drink-driving.

A poignant appeal or a sad cry! A feature film made by the students of Lewis School, Pengam, has been chosen as the Regional winner of all Wales Multi Media Competition. The film highlights the tragedy or aftermath of a death caused by drink-driving. The story is narrated in the form of a song. It is sung and written by Richard Morgan. He has taken a sensitive approach towards the issue. The most significant part is that he has been able to put emotions into words and do justice to it. It talks about the suffering and agony which one has to experience when someone dies in a fatal accident.

It brings our attention back to the primary question. It takes a fraction of a second to lose control and then eventually lose our life. Do we really become blind or ignorant for a moment? It seems to be an act of complete negligence on the part of driver. We start behaving as if nothing is going to happen to us. It is not a good way of looking at the situation when you are drunk. You can barely stand properly, let alone thinking about driving a vehicle. You should not drive after drinking. This is the golden rule.

ELECTRIC VANS DELIVER IN LONDON

Nissan and FedEx Express have gone into partnership to trial Nissan’s NV200 electric vehicles and potentially change the way companies get around congested city streets and do their bit for the environment at the same time.

FedEx currently operate 43 all electric vehicles in London, Paris, New York and other dense urban cities around the world.

With emissions from a billion vehicles on the road, we are all contributing to a plant-wide problem of polluting the air. With zero emissions, these vans are the way forward. Emissions are greatest when you sit in traffic surrounded by cars, their engines idling, so with the vans used to sitting in congested London streets, they can reduce their carbon footprint.

POLICE CRACKDOWN ON DRINK DRIVERS OVER CHRISTMAS

More and more boroughs are using drastic punishments for anybody caught drink driving over the Christmas period. Drivers in Barrhead and Neilston will automatically lose their licence, be banned from driving for 12 months and get a criminal record if found to be driving over the limit. Some will even have their car confiscated.

Tough new measures need to be taken and the police will use all their powers to punish those that give a high reading or refuse to give a sample for analysis.

Chief Inspector Carle added: “We have to get the message across to people that they will be detected and brought before the courts if they take the risk by drink driving. As well as a fine and the chance of losing their licence such irresponsible drivers will have a criminal record and an offence which stays firmly on their licence for 11 years.”

Statistics show that more than one in seven deaths on Scottish roads involves a driver who is over the legal limit. Not only does this cost the economy millions each year but it devastates lives for the victim’s family and friends.

Text and Driving

Unfortunately, for many people, texting whilst driving does not ring alarm bells and come with a feeling of danger. Yet it is. It’s very bad.

Whilst you are 4 times as likely to have an accident if you are talking on your cell whilst driving, you are 23 times likely to have a crash if you are texting. When you’re are sitting in quiet traffic and exercising your  patience it’s tempting to grab your phone.

One must remember though, you need to be alert at all times when driving. You have to stay focused and be aware of what is happening around you. The car in front may break suddenly, or a motorbike may be driving up the side of you. There are any number of reasons why you must stay focused whilst driving.

Obviously we would suggest to never ever use your phones whilst driving. However, in today’s society some people feel they need to answer their phone. If this is the case pick up a hands free kit and a phone stand so you at least have your hands free.

Remember, you can always get back to a phone call you can never re-wind an accident.

DRIVING DURING THE FESTIVE PERIOD

Driving conditions are expected to be much better this year than last, with temperatures slightly warmer this year however, this does not mean that we can become complacent as drivers during the month of December.

Motorists are urged to be alert on the roads and drive carefully on frosty roads and watch out for black ice.

To check your car before each journey, especially your tyres and ensure you have enough fuel to get you to your destination and extra in case you get stuck in traffic.

Not to use your windscreen wipers as an ice scraper, you will no doubt ruin them and cause yourself serious problems should it rain. Instead use an ice scraper or warm cloth to clear any ice.

Over the Christmas and New Year period when travelling to see family and friends it is important to plan your journey and be aware of your fatigue levels. Ensure you take a break and stretch your legs should you be on a long on journey.

After a Night Out: Hand the keys to your wife.

We have known it for long! Women are voted-up as safe drivers by a new poll (AA/Populus). The results show that men prefer to take the back seat when it comes to driving after a night out in the local pub. It makes perfect sense to hand over the keys to your female partner when you are drunk. There is no point in driving when you cannot pay proper attention to it. The recent poll has done a massive favour to set the expectations clear. We all know that it is not a healthy practice, under any given circumstances. This would only worsen the situation.

The report could not have come at a better time. The festive spirit is in the air. Everyone is looking to celebrate the occasion. It should be remembered that the core objective is to spread awareness among the people. We feel encouraged, to say the least. The good part is that it brings a sense of responsibility in us. It is another attempt made to keep the roads safe and secure during this festival season. You should make an active participation by being responsible towards the situation.

A 90 MINUTE DRIVE TURNED INTO 30 HOURS

An elderly man who embarked on an hour and a half journey to visit his daughter was still attempting the journey 30 hours later.

Mr Leighton had become confused on his journey from Berkshire to Kent after missing his turning, he then took a series of wrong turns, which meant him stopping to refuel and taking a much needed nap at a service station.

He had made the journey to his daughter’s house many times before and cameras picked him up only 6 miles away from her house at one point, when police were called to investigate his whereabouts after his worried daughter filed a missing person claim.

He was eventually found in South London, still attempting to drive to his daughter’s house.

THEORY TEST CHANGES 2012

Many pupils are concerned about the changes to the theory test set to take place in January 2012. However, these pupils are not sure what is going to change, so really their worries are unfounded.

Let me explain, the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) will be adding new multiple choice questions to the theory test and these questions will not be published anywhere. At present learners have access to all the official DSA theory questions and many are choosing to simply revise the answers rather than learning the Highway Code.

The DSA will still continue to release the old theory test questions and answers to enable pupils to understand the format of the test and learn from them.

So in short the theory test will still continue to have 50 multiple choice questions and the hazard perception test stays unchanged, pupils just need to go into the test having understood the Highway Code.
