Rewriting the Road Safety Rules

In the USA they are already making plans to rewrite their road safety rules in better preparation for driverless cars.

There are talks of scarping the safety rules mandating steering wheels, pedals and mirrors.

It is said that they could possibly be removed from the safety manuals and cars to help cut the cost of producing fully self-driving vehicles, although the technology will have to be advanced before all elements that make a car are removed.

Currently, the US vehicle safety standards are written (like such standards everywhere else in the world) with the assumption that a human driver will be in charge of the vehicle. While a fully self-driving car would not need anyone in charge, such a scenario might be further off than speculation around autonomous vehicles has suggested.

Drivers Don’t Have to be Human!

Because of the evolution of self-driving cars becoming closer each day, the Department of Transport has started to change the definition of a ‘driver’.

They state ” adapt the definitions of ‘driver’ and ‘operator’ to recognize that such terms do not refer exclusively to a human, but may, in fact, include an automated system.”

Driver-less Cars | Key Questions

Will there still be crashes? Around 94% of US vehicular accidents involve human error and therefore are potentially avoidable. Driverless cars could make roads significantly safer.

Will there be less congestion? Automated vehicles (AV’s) will enable a higher density of passengers per road mile thus making traffic move more efficiently.

Will all cars be autonomous? Autonomous vehicles are expected to comprise 25% of the global market between 2035 and 2040.

Will I need a driving licence? The UK government makes a distinction between highly automated vehicles and fully automated vehicles. For AVs rules might change as they may appeal to drivers who can’t or don’t wish to drive regular cars.

Will I still need to buy insurance? Yes, though it might depend on the car’s manufacturer. Companies like Volvo have confirmed they will self-insure their automated cars.

£200 Fine and 6 Penalty Points

Up to eight million drivers could be risking the penalty for texting or using their phones, are you?

Motorists can be fined £200 and land six penalty points for using their phone while behind the wheel of the car.

This includes using it when the car is stationary or as a sat nav.

To use it as a sat nav, drivers must place it in a mount in a location that does not block their view and must ensure they do not touch it while on the road.
