In the USA they are already making plans to rewrite their road safety rules in better preparation for driverless cars.
There are talks of scarping the safety rules mandating steering wheels, pedals and mirrors.
It is said that they could possibly be removed from the safety manuals and cars to help cut the cost of producing fully self-driving vehicles, although the technology will have to be advanced before all elements that make a car are removed.
Currently, the US vehicle safety standards are written (like such standards everywhere else in the world) with the assumption that a human driver will be in charge of the vehicle. While a fully self-driving car would not need anyone in charge, such a scenario might be further off than speculation around autonomous vehicles has suggested.
