Overloading Your Car

It’s a great feeling when you finally pass your driving test and start learning to drive. The amount of freedom it gives you is incredible and opens you up to a new world of possibilities – But it is important to remember that the world of driving does not come without it’s limitations.

We’re not talking about speed limits here, but the issue over overloading your car. All cars have a maximum weight capacity that they can handle, so if you are planning to pack your bags for a trip away or helping a friend move house, make sure to take your cars load into consideration first.

Dealing Best With Breakdowns

So you’re planning a weekend away this summer. Your accommodation is all booked, your bags are all packed, and you’re all ready to set off, until – At the last minute, as always – You face the dreaded car breakdown crisis.

So what to do? The best course of action is to get a professional involved as soon as possible. This will help you to diagnose and resolve the issue as fast as possible. Don’t worry about the cost – You will likely be glad to pay to avoid missing that weekend away.

Long Drives In Bad Weather

There’s nothing more daunting to the new or inexperienced driver than the prospect of a long drive ahead of them. The idea of being behind the wheel for several hours at a time, possibly facing traffic on the motorway on your way to a holiday, is enough to discourage even the most confident of drivers at some point.

So that worry is doubled when there’s bad weather ahead. If it’s raining (Or even worse – Snowing!) when you’re planning a long drive, remember to allow more time to complete your journey as you will need to drive at slower speeds to accommodate for the increased stopping distances.

Watch Out For Pedestrians

There are a variety of hazards you can face when out and about driving – From poor weather conditions rendering road surfaces unsafe to drive on, to high volumes of traffic making the roads busier and therefore more hazardous, there’s certainly no shortage of things to watch out for. But of all the hazards to keep your eyes on, there are none more important than pedestrians.

The hazard perception test includes pedestrians as hazards to train you to watch out for any people walking that might want to cross without warning. This goes especially for children who may not be as aware of the green cross code as they should be.

Google Maps and Driving

It’s always easier to drive in areas that you’re more familiar with. Not just because you already know your way around the streets without needing to stop and ask for directions, but also because it helps you to anticipate the traffic levels at certain times of the day to optimise your driving route. For the areas you’re less familiar with, however, there’s always Google Maps.

Google Maps can act as a Sat-Nav to guide you on your journey as well as to estimate journey times and to advise on traffic conditions, as well as allowing for route changes to keep you on the right track to your destination should you take a wrong turn.

Driving With The Radio On

Here at Britannia Driving School, our aim is to help as many young drivers become the best they can be behind the wheel by offering as much free advice and information as possible. One tip we often encourage users to pick up on is how to maintain concentration when behind the wheel – Which is the reason we don’t play the radio when on driving lessons.

Although some drivers may say that they find it easier to drive with music playing, we would recommend avoiding this when you first start driving to maximise your concentration. Once you feel comfortable enough behind the wheel, feel free to turn the radio on!

Failing The Test – Because of No Insurance

A driving pupil failed their driving test yesterday, through no fault of her own – After police pulled over the car and discovered the vehicle had no MOT or insurance. To make matters worse, the unlucky pupil was on their way to pass the test with flying colours – After no mistakes were recorded before being pulled over.

Unfortunately for the pupil, she will now have to reset the test at an additional cost in order to pass – Which has the police involved calling for the DSA to offer a free test to the pupil as a gesture of goodwill.

Speeding Urban Myths Debunked!

There are many myths that drivers perpetuate about the world of motoring – Including a particularly popular one that driving examiners will only pass a certain amount of pupils each day – Sorry to disappoint, but if you didn’t pass the driving test, you just didn’t meet our standards!

One other myth that is more dangerous is that you can legally drive up to 10% over the speed limit – For example up to 33 miles per hour in a 30 zone. Unfortunately not – If you’re caught anywhere over the speed limit, you will face a fine or even a driving ban – No exceptions!
