Newly Passed Driver Tips

If you have recently passed your driving test, you are most likely either looking forward to finally getting out on the roads on your own, or already enjoying the freedom that being a newly qualified driver gives you – And quite rightly too, you’ve earned it!

We would only advise you to approach driving with caution to begin with. Your first few years behind the wheel are the most likely time you will have an accident, so remember to keep your excitement to a minimum and your concentration to a maximum to make sure you enjoy the start to your driving life as much as you should.

Here at Britannia Driving School, we like to pride ourselves on our ability to give as much good, free advice out to our driving pupils as possible – However many people don’t realise that we also provide training for Driving Instructors as well! In fact, if it wasn’t for our team of instructors, we wouldn’t be able to keep getting such high pass rates all the time!

So let’s take a moment or two to appreciate our instructors – Every time they have shown patience when our pupils are struggling with picking up a particular skill, or when they have given you the confidence you need to pass your test.

Bounce Back After Driving Test Failure

If you’re lucky enough to have passed your driving test on the first attempt, then you are one of a small minority. Most people need at least 2 or more attempts to tackle the driving test successfully, and some may require even more!

If you do unfortunately happen to fail your test, try to remember that you’re not alone. Instead of letting it get you down, it’s far better to bounce back from your failure and to focus on improving your skills so that you can pass the second time around!

Take Constructive Criticism

If you are now, or even if you ever have been, a learner driver, you are probably familiar with the idea that not everything always comes naturally when you’re behind the wheel. So if you have struggled to pick up a particular manoeuvre or found clutch control to be difficult at some points, you have probably had your fair share of constructive criticism.

Unfortunately sometimes it feels that if our instructors point out our mistakes, they are just trying to belittle you – But try not to feel that way. After all, every instructor is only as good as their pupils, so instead of getting defensive or disheartened, try listening to their feedback and practising until you get it perfect.

Petrol Station Tips

For many learner drivers, to successfully pass their driving test is a major milestone in their life, and to finally get out onto the roads on their own is a fantastic reward for their hard-earned efforts. However, one thing still trips many a newbie driver up – Their first trip to the petrol station.

As learner drivers, you are likely not familiar with the process of refuelling your car. so it is understandable that this might worry some of you. If in doubt, take an elder or more experienced driver with you for the first one or two times so they can show you the ropes – You will soon realise it’s really not that difficult!

Green Cross Code For Drivers

As a pedestrian, you are probably more than familiar with the Green Cross Code – Having been taught to recite it before crossing a road since childhood, it is more than likely deeply ingrained in your memory by now.

However what you may not be aware of is that even as a car driver, it is necessary to remember the Green Cross Code. This helps you to think about what actions pedestrians are taking and will enable you to drive as safely as possible, particularly at crossings and traffic lights in the future.

Dangers of Summer Pedestrians

It looks like we’ve made it at last – Summer 2017 is upon us! Whilst this is great for many reasons – Not least the sunshine, allowing us to drive with our windows and roofs down to make the most of it – Summer driving does come with it’s inherent dangers.

One of the main things to watch out for this summer is the danger of pedestrians – Especially children. The hot weather brings more and more people out of their homes to enjoy the sunshine, but this also means a rise in people crossing the roads, and youngsters are particularly likely to step into the roads without due attention – So stay alert!

Have A Driving Day Off

If you’re a learner driver, you may be all too familiar with the stress that being behind the wheel can cause. Maybe you’re struggling to master a particular manoeuvre or perhaps it’s just learning to fit your driving lessons in amongst your busy schedule – Sometimes it can get a bit much.

If you ever do feel like this, don’t worry – Just try taking a little time off. We don’t recommend going months without a lesson, as you will probably start to get rusty on your skills, but maybe leave the theory test revision book for a night, or hang up your keys for a day and put your feet up. You will likely feel that after a short break, you are fully replenished and eager to get back into the driving seat.

Keep Those Wipers Working!

If you have passed your driving test, or even if you are part way along the process of learning to drive, you will likely be familiar with the challenges presented by driving in a variety of weather conditions. Unfortunately for every day we have driving in beautiful summer sunshine, we probably have three or more days of driving in summer rain!

When driving in rain, remember to keep your speed lower than you would normally drive at to allow for longer stopping distances on wet roads, and to maximise your visibility at all times, always keep those wipers working!
