The First Drive On Your Own

If you’re like many of our driving pupils, you can’t wait to finally pass your test. For all those months of hard work and anticipation to pay off, so that you can at last say that you are a fully qualified driver, and you’re now ready to take to the roads without supervision.

But what happens when you have actually passed your test – And you need to start driving on your own? For many this is a daunting experience, as all learner drivers will have become accustomed to driving with a driving instructor or a member of the family beside them, which to some can act as a crutch to keep them safe – But when you’re the one in the driving seat, it can be a different story.

Stop-Start Traffic

If you are a regular driver, there’s likely to be a few things that annoy you when you’re behind the wheel. It might be the fact that you are expected to offer friends and family lifts all the time, or to be the designated driver on all nights out, or it might be simply the rising cost of fuel!

However one thing we are sure will irritate most motorists more than anything, is the annoyance of being stuck in “stop-start” traffic. This is when a traffic jam moves along at a glacial pace, sometimes only feet or even inches at a time. For some reason it always seems to happen when you’re in a rush, or on the way to work

The Designated Driver Responsibility

If you are a young driver who has recently passed their driving test, you will likely be keen to get out and about in the car as much as possible over the coming weeks and months. This includes picking up your friends, giving family lifts around town (Whether you like it or not!) – As well as being the designated driver on nights out.

Especially as we are now in the run up to Christmas, drink-driving is soon to reach it’s all-year high – So don’t be one of the fools who is caught out being over the limit when behind the wheel. If you’re driving, stay on soft drinks. If you’re drinking, leave the keys at home.

Early Morning Driving

Driving is one of those strange tasks that we have to do, where the way you do it can change from day to day. For example, when driving in wetter weather you need to drive slower and leave more room between yourself and the car in front to allow for longer stopping distances on wetter roads.

Another time you need to drive differently is early in the morning – Similar to driving late at night, especially during the winter months, when its darker for longer, and when you are more likely to be tired behind the wheel – So  whether it’s your morning commute or an early start to a holiday, make sure to drive carefully.

Phones Off When Driving

When you’re behind the wheel, there’s certainly a lot of distractions that can come your way – Whether its having children in the back of the car requiring your attention, or blasting music out of the speakers that is causing you to lose your focus on the road.

It’s no wonder that so many people are calling for mobile phones to be disabled when in cars. Smartphones are proven to be one of the biggest distractions a driver can face when behind the wheel, so make sure yours is off when you’re out driving.
