Out and About This Christmas

You may or may not have noticed, but the Christmas period is now firmly upon us. We would advise you to take care when you are out and about this December, whether that means Christmas Shopping or driving around dropping presents off to people’s houses, or if you are visiting family and friends this festive season.

With the cold and wet weather, the roads can be particularly dangerous, so always make sure to set out with more time than necessary for your journey and to drive safely and below the legal speed limit.

Don’t Be Afraid – Get In Touch!

Here at Britannia, we deal with a lot of nervous pupils. Sometimes it might be a particular aspect of being behind the wheel that a learner driver might struggle with, such as navigating an island, whereas in other circumstances some pupils are terrified of getting into a vehicle at all.

But there’s no reason to fear driving lessons – Even if you’re a novice, we will make sure you learn all of the necessary skills to turn you into the most confident driver – And you’ll pass your test in no time!

The Speed Limit For Reversing

Here at Britannia, we do get a lot of questions from driving pupils eager to know more. Some are much more sensible than others, however – So don’t ask us how much it costs to bribe a driving examiner!

One good question are often asked is the speed limit for driving in reverse. Whilst there is no fixed speed limit for being in reverse, it will actually apply the same as driving forwards, however do make sure to exercise the same amount of caution when reversing as driving normally, and don’t reverse more than is necessary.

Pressures of Learning To Drive

As a learner driver, you may well be feeling under pressure to push forward with your lessons and to pass your driving test. Unfortunately, this can often have a detrimental effect on a learner driver, as it can lead to unnecessary stress and expectations that may feel unrealistic.

To combat this, try to remember that passing your driving test is a positive achievement, and that it is only for yourself. If it helps, also try keeping the date of your practical test to yourself so reduce the burden of any additional stress you may be feeling.

Festive Shopping Driving

There are certain times in the year when driving seems to be harder than most. For example, Summer Bank Holidays on the motorway tend not to be the most enjoyable times you spend behind the wheel – If you’ve done it once or more, you will know exactly why!

One other major time the roads will be busier than most is during the Festive Season, particularly around City Centres or Shopping towns at the weekend. A good way to deal with this is to be up and out early, to (hopefully) avoid the rush – And always remember to keep your Christmas spirit in tow!

De-Icing Your Car

We tried to ignore it as much as we could. We denied it as long as possible, some of us still occasionally driving with the windows down, or leaving the house at the last minute, not expecting to see a layer of thick frost over our cars, but unfortunately it’s time to concede defeat – Winter is here.

Unfortunately this does mean we need to allow more time before setting off on car journeys to de-ice our cars. Make sure to always keep a full bottle of de-icer inside your car for emergencies, and if possible try to cover your front and back windscreens at night with a towel or sheet to prevent the ice from setting in too thick.

Driving on Narrow Roads

We all have a dream of how driving would be in a perfect world – No stop-start traffic to put up with, no bad weather to make being out and about in your car a hazard in itself – Just a beautiful, carefree drive in the sunshine with the roof down.

One such instance we have to put up with the realities of driving is when other drivers cause a problem for us – Such as on a narrow road, when another driver is coming towards you. Unfortunately it is not always clear who needs to give way, so we do recommend using some considerate driving techniques and pulling into any available space to allow the other driver to pas you by.
