When Not To Drive

When it comes to learning to drive, you are going to hear lots of advice from different people – Some might tell you tips for how to pass your theory test, others might offer advice on the best way to master the art of steering – Plus lots and lots more.

However one bit of advice you are not likely to hear is when NOT to drive – For example, when the snow has come down thick and fast overnight, you might want to give getting behind the wheel a miss, likewise when your car has been teetering on the verge of a breakdown – Play it safe instead!

Between The Theory And The Practical

If you’re currently learning to drive, you may well be nervous about the upcoming obstacles you may soon have to face – For example, after you’ve taken the first step by starting your driving lessons, the next hurdle will be the dreaded Theory Test.

But once this is out of the way, you will then have to face the Practical Test. It is advisable to not rush into this, despite your excitement at having passed the Theory – But take your time and only tackle this obstacle once you are sure you are ready.

Keeping Cars Healthy

As we’re now on the verge of being dropped straight into the middle of winter, the last thing any of us will want to do when out and about driving, is to break down. Unfortunately, this is likely to happen to many of us before the end of the year – But there are a few ways you can help to prevent it.

For one, always ensure you have enough fuel (Petrol or Diesel) as well as enough oil (Check your dipstick!) – Without these, your car will fail to function properly. It is also advisable to get a regular service for your car – Just once a year should be fine – To make sure your motor is always in tip-top condition.

Eating Whilst Behind The Wheel

There are a great many hazards you may face when behind the wheel – These could be as mundane as poor weather conditions rendering roads unsafe for driving on, to something as extreme as multi-car pile-ups on the motorway or drunk drivers putting others in danger!

So why make driving more dangerous for yourself? One common way many motorists do this is by eating behind the wheel. Whilst it is not illegal, we do advise to exercise caution if you are eating when driving, as it can greatly impair your concentration.

Befriending The Driving Instructor

As a learner driver, you may be struggling with various aspects of the educational curve – Whether that is remembering all those road signs for your Theory test (There really are quite a lot!) or if it’s putting that into practice and having your first lesson!

One thing that can always be helpful is having a friendly driving instructor. This can really make the entire process of learning to drive much easier by relaxing you when behind the wheel – However, beware that if you are good friends with your instructor, he or she may not find it easy to criticise you if you are making mistakes!

Top Tips for Friendly Driving

When it comes to learning to drive, there is much more to learn than simply being able to make a car move. There is a whole host of skills to pick up, including (but not limited to) passing the Theory test, getting to grips with clutch control, and mastering manoeuvres.

One thing many new drivers don’t pick up until after they’ve passed their test is how best to approach driving etiquette – Meaning the unwritten rules of the road, that you aren’t legally obliged to follow, however that you may be expected to be aware of.

Defrosting Your Car

Winter can be a great time of the year – With Christmas just around the corner, and being able to cuddle up in a warm house in front of a roaring log fire watching festive movies, for many it really is the most wonderful time of the year.

However for most of us, it’s not quite as pleasant. One of the many drawbacks is needing to defrost your car – A morning ritual made more difficult by the subzero temperatures and the solid layer of ice across our windscreens. One top tip to avoid this is to leave a flat sheet across your windscreen overnight.

Inheriting Dangerous Driving

There’s a lot of ways our parents might help us when it comes to driving. In some cases it might be that your parents pay for your driving lessons, in other cases, it may be that they take you out driving to get you used to behind the wheel – And for others, they may buy your first car for you!

However, one way they certainly won’t help you is by encouraging dangerous driving habits. Recent studies have shown that children who grow up around parents who practise road rage or unsafe behaviour behind the wheel are more likely to exhibit similar actions later in life themselves – So drive safely fro your children!
