Safety for Teen Drivers

Although learning to drive can be a tough process to go through, it all pays off once you manage to pass your driving test and can finally take to the roads as a fully qualified driver.

However as a teen driver, you may not know that you are actually most at risk of being in danger on the roads. Contrary to common belief, teen drivers are involved in more road traffic accidents than drivers of other ages not due to taking more risks behind the wheel, but simply because they are less experienced that motorists with a few more years under their seatbelts.

Sleeping in Self-Driving Cars

There are a lot of problems we might have with driving – From being stuck in traffic to breaking down on a journey, being behind the wheel can put you under pressure at times.

However with the imminent advent of self-driving cars, there is one thing drivers can look forward to when on the roads – Having a nap.

Yes, one in four drivers have said that they would be more than happy to take a quick snooze whilst being driven around in an autonomous vehicle – Followed by having a chit-chat with your passengers, browsing the internet or watching television.

Suddenly it doesn’t seem so bad, does it?

Improving After Passing

How does the old adage go? “You don’t learn to drive until you have passed your test.” – You have probably heard this figure of speech, or some variation of it, at some point over your experience of learning to drive, but exactly how much truth lies behind the saying?

A lot, as it turns out. A vast proportion of experienced drivers would agree that the most important part of their learning curve of driving took place after passing their test and long since, as the more miles they clocked up behind the wheel led to greater experience on the roads and to gradually becoming a better driver. If you too are planning to improve your skills after passing your test, let us know and can offer you a Pass Plus course to help improve after passing your test.

Should We Re-Sit The Driving Test?

The driving test can be a particularly stressful point in your life – From the constant revising and practising to get perfect, to the worrying about the mistakes you could possibly make on the day, it’s no wonder most people are so relieved once they have finally passed.

It’s also no wonder many would rather not re-sit the test – However many drivers believe they would fail the test should they have to re-take it, which suggests some of us don’t believe we are up to the best standard of driving, or possibly are even dangerous on the road – So, what do you think? Should we re-sit the driving test?

Driving When Stressed

There a lot of things that can go wrong when driving – From poor weather conditions, rendering the roads dangerous to be driving on, to bad drivers putting yourself and others in danger with erratic behaviour – You do need to be on your guard when behind the wheel.

This is why it is always best not to drive when stressed, or under any unusual emotional stress such as being angry or upset. Whether it’s a bad day at the office, family problems or just having things on your mind in general, always make sure not to let this affect your driving, as stress can reduce concentration significantly, putting you at risk if you are driving a car.

Traffic Crimes

There are plenty of hazards we face every time we get behind the wheel, from weather conditions making the roads unsafe to be on, to car faults which may put you and others at risk. While these instances would be out of your control, one thing you can be in control of is to never break the laws of the road.

Driving offences include speeding, which is the most common traffic crime, but also driving using a mobile phone, driving without insurance, dangerous driving, failing to stop or to report an accident, drink-driving, and plenty more.

Following Directions When Driving

Learning to drive is one thing, but once you have passed your test and find yourself navigating the roads on your own without the help of a driving instructor, it is another.

Ideally, you would love to have a friend next to you to confidently tell you each turn to make until you arrive at your destination. Unfortunately this is not always the case, and sometimes you will need to rely on yourself. Invest in a sat-nav to replace your passenger, or study a map before setting out on your journey and plan the steps you need to take to get there.

The Risk of New Drivers

Driving can be a great skill, but it also comes with its fair share of risk too. From driving in bad weather conditions, to facing unexpected malfunctions with your car, there is a certain element of danger to accept when you sit behind the wheel.

One of the biggest risks to road users is that of newly qualified drivers. These pose more of a threat than experienced drivers for several reasons, as their relative lack of driving experience combined with their initial excitement with being a driver can lead to dangers on the roads.

If you or someone you know is a new driver, always make sure to exercise full caution at all times.

How to Plan Your Journey

Long journeys can be a hassle- What with contending with busy traffic on motorways or battling the dangers of driving when tired, any journey longer than your normal driving duration will put more stress on you as a driver.

Try to ease this stress by planning your journey well. If the time you will be travelling overlaps a busy time of the day such as rush hour, try to find an alternative route that does not use roads that will be particularly busy at this time. Also if your journey takes place primarily on the motorway, try to plot a good place to stop for short, regular breaks throughout the journey such as motorway services, to refresh and avoid fatigue.
